A different way of understanding resilience
Often, I have heard people describe resilience as the ability to endure, to push through, or to recover quickly from adversity. Somehow it felt to me that this can be too forceful. Of course, this can be useful in certain moments.
The danger of this forcefulness is that it can override what we feel … until the body, mind, or emotions can no longer sustain it. Over time, this could lead to disconnection, or even burnout …
What I have come to see is that resilience is not only about endurance. It is really about awareness. An awareness of what is happening within us — in our body, in our mind, and in our emotional responses — especially when we are under pressure. You could say it is about being mindful from moment to moment.
From this perspective, resilience is less about endurance, but more about noticing, becoming aware, aligning, and returning to balance.
.

The Triangle of Resilience – is a way of exploring this perspective. It looks at three interconnected dimensions of our human experience:
Body – Regulation
Our capacity to sense and regulate our physical states, such as tension, fatigue, and energy
Mind — Clarity
Our ability to think, interpret, and make sense of situations, especially when we are under pressure
Emotion — Connection
Our ability to remain aware of our emotional states and stay connected with ourselves and the people around us
These three dimensions are never separate. They are constantly influencing one another. When one becomes unsettled, the others are often affected.
With awareness, practices, and the support of effective tools, we can bring them back to balance. This, in turn, will bring us a sense of stability.
The inner core – at the centre of the triangle is an even deeper layer of stability:
Values — what we stand for
Our guiding principles for the choices we make in life, especially when situations are not clear
Purpose — what gives direction
Our North Star that helps orient our actions and sustain our energy over time
Together, they form a strong foundation. They are not always visible, but deeply influential. :) (You will definitely know when you are off track.)
Do you know that the triangle is one of the most stable forms found in nature and design? It holds structure through balance — each point supporting the others.
This structure illustrates a powerful integration of our human experience, not as separate parts but as a whole.
We are, at the same time, physical, mental, and emotional. And resilience is not found in one of these alone, but in how they are interconnected with each other.
The Triangle of Resilience is a gentle reminder and an invitation – to return to a more integrated way of being.
Something to reflect on
- Where do I currently feel balanced, and where do I feel challenged?
- How can I lead myself with more awareness, ownership, and intention?
- What is one step I can take to support my resilience?
